What is group therapy and how does it help?

At the crossroads of connection and shared growth is group therapy. By sharing your struggles and challenges with a group facing similar circumstances, you can promote a sense of community, increase your motivation,
and stay true to your path to recovery.
Group therapy empowers you to release a sense of guilt, explore creative solutions, and bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. Along the way, your group is there to support you.
Currently, I offer group therapy sessions for stress management, mindfulness and emotion regulation, and psychotherapy. The participants in each group share a common challenge and work together towards healing.

Mindfulness and distress tolerance skills group

Mindfulness reduces suffering, and increases happiness, allowing you to take control of your mind. Tolerating distress is the “ability to
tolerate and survive the crisis without making things worse”. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, we have all been forced to accept that uncertainty, pain & distress are part of life. The inability to accept this fact dramatically increases pain
and suffering. Through learning distress tolerance tools in this group, you will learn to change yourself and change your life.
Anger management group (become less reactive)

Has intense anger or aggressive behavior resulted in emotional consequences? This group enables participants to learn, practice, and integrate strategies to manage anger
and reactivity in provocative situations. Providing practical coping skills to stop negative behavior, avoid escalation, and assertively resolve conflicts. A few of the goals and abilities provided include:
- Transform anger into a healthy, proactive life force.
- Eliminate self-destructive behavior.
- Explore pain masked by anger.
- Enhance communication skills.
- Learn emotion regulation skills & overcome reactivity.
- Express needs in healthy ways. Resolve conflicts.
- Process anger by understanding psychodynamics.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
There are five powerful benefits of group therapyReceives much-needed support from others (and gives support)
- Is able to see their own feelings more clearly through the experiences of others.
- Learns to relate better to others and self.
- Enjoys a safe social environment for exploring difficult feelings and issues.
These benefits cannot be understated. Humans are social creatures. While individual therapy can help each of us better understand our internal motivations, group therapy can provide social acceptance.
What can I expect from group therapy?
Each group therapy session will begin with a short discussion of progress, unsettled issues from previous sessions, or some other matters as needed. Questions are posed and members may offer input as they wish. There is no pressure to participate,
but participation benefits all present. In fact, we find that when we personally participate, we are often benefited more than others. Still, your level of participation is up to you. The group is there to both share their own experiences in applying
psychotherapy and support one another. Overall, group therapy is a positive experience and can help you gain a sense of community, support, and courage.
